New Top Level Domains
Who's in charge?
There is an organization called the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) this is the organization that governs the internet. ICANN works to regulate all disputes, domain names and online activities.
Why so many new domains?
In 2012 ICANN opened up the application process for organizations, businesses and interested parties to apply for domain extensions.
The main piece of the application process was that if you are an interested party looking to register for a domain, there was an applicaiton process of $185,000 USD per domain that you applied for.
There were over 1900 applications brought forth, not all of them were approved and many applications are in contention, meaning that multiple parties were looking to register for the same domains.
Can I have my own extension?
The rules for who can purchase their own extensions now are through ICANN, check their rules in regards to the latest news in registering domains.
How do I buy them?
If there is a domain that you wanted to purchase from the new top level domains, you would need to go to an accredited registrar to look up these domains.
I work for Register.com and Network Solutions and we are accredited for many of the new strings coming out.
Why are they important?
